The current rates
These are the VAT rates and thresholds in Ireland when you have to register:
- 23% is the default VAT rate, which encompasses most products and services. Only items specifically designated for lower tax brackets escape this standard tariff.
- 13.5% VAT rate applies to some products and services, including power supply, construction and related services, farm contracting, temporary vehicle rentals, and janitorial or upkeep work.
- The hospitality and entertainment sectors benefit from a 9% VAT rate, which applies to restaurants, hotels, movie theatres, hair salons, and print news publications.
- A specialised 4.8% VAT rate is reserved for certain agricultural transactions. This includes the sale of farm animals (with the exception of poultry), racing greyhounds, and equine leasing arrangements.
- The zero-rated VAT category encompasses a diverse range of items: all exported goods, basic foodstuffs (tea, coffee, milk, bread), educational materials, youth apparel and footwear, oral medications for humans and animals, agricultural supplies (seeds, fruit saplings, fertilizers, livestock feed), and mobility aids for those with disabilities.
